Tupă Matis, present wife of Bushe Matis, a young Matis leader. Matis women normally have their
faces tattooed during their adolescence. Tupă is unusual in that
she has waited to be tattooed. One reason for the delay is that Tupă
has been under treatment for malaria, a common affliction among the Matis
Indians.
Tupă Matis was formerly married to
Baritsica Matis, demonstrating that the Matis practice divorce and remarriage,
not unlike most Western cultures. However, one complicating factor is
the ability of Matis men to have more than one wife, still a common practice
in Matis society. |
