All along the meandering Río Gálvez majestic ceiba trees (Ceiba pentandra,
some of the biggest trees in the Amazon Rainforest) offer shade and combined with
various other trees create the distinctive three-level primary rainforest canopy.
The number of species (species richness) in this tropical forest is among
the highest in the world as is the species diversity. Presently the
Amazon Rainforest is being destroyed at an alarming rate. One of the
greatest dangers to this Rainforest is deforestation and its conversion into
plantations of palm oil.
