The two-toed sloth ("pelejo," in local Spanish) is a familiar pet in the homes of the Matsés tribe.  In addition, this sloth is often hunted and part of the Matses cuisine.  The two-toed sloth is also important during the Ceremony of Comoc (the singers) which is analogous to the Matis tribe's Ceremony of Mariwin.  This is an immature sloth whose mother was probably hunted and killed and the young taken as a temporary pet who will be eaten when mature.
